Artificial Intelligence art, more accurately neural network art, is a new form of artwork created using clever algorithms. Many of them appear to have been created by a human mind, but this couldn’t be further from the truth – – at least in part.
It has begun to take the art world by storm and is starting to raise some interesting philosophical questions behind what is meant by art in the first place. Indeed, one piece of AI art, “Portrait of Edmond Belamy,” recently sold at auction for an astonishing $432,500.
In fact, the use of computers for creating artwork is nothing new. Human artists have been augmenting their repertoire using computers since at least the 1950s. Engineers at the Max Bense lab at the University of Stuttgart were one of the early pioneers in this field at the time.
“Artists like Frieder Nake, Georg Nees, Manfred Mohr, Vera Molnár, and many others explored the use of mainframe computers, plotters, and algorithms for the creation of visually interesting artifacts.
What started (as Frieder Nake recalls) simply as an exercise to test some of the novel equipment in Bense’s lab, quickly became an art movement,” – The Gradient.
