Traditional upscaling starts with a low-resolution image and tries to improve its visual quality at higher resolutions. AI upscaling takes a different approach: Given a low-resolution image, a deep learning model predicts a high-resolution image that would downscale to look like the original, low-resolution image.
To predict the upscaled images with high accuracy, a neural network model must be trained on countless images. The deployed AI model can then take low-resolution video and produce incredible sharpness and enhanced details no traditional scaler can recreate. Edges look sharper, hair looks scruffier and landscapes pop with striking clarity.
SHIELD delivers AI powered upscaling, capable of intelligently scaling lower resolution video to your TV’s native resolution. With this new feature, HD movies on Netflix or Prime Video will look sharper on your 4K display.
By default, “Enhanced” upscaling is enabled on your SHIELD. To enable “AI-Enhanced” upscaling, go to Settings > AI upscaling and select “AI-Enhanced”.
Detail enhancement is an “AI-Enhanced” only option and can be customized based on your own preference. A side by side demo mode is available to compare “Basic” to AI upscaling.
Demo mode will let the user see the difference SHIELD’s new scaling technology makes in real time.

Upscaling of digital images (or video frames) refers to increasing the resolution of the original images. This can be very useful when artists work with (older) low-resolution materials that need to be used in a high-resolution output file. There are different approaches to upscaling. Some of them have already been integrated into commonly used image editing programs such as Adobe Photoshop or Adobe After Effects. Some others are available as stand-alone applications. In the context of this guide, we only focus on methods based on artificial intelligence and give an introduction to the employment of Deep Learning technology for video upscaling. The target group of this guide are artists who have no previous experiences in the field of Deep Learning systems and want to use deep learning technology with as less effort as possible.
